Stéphanie Montagut

Born in 1976 in Dordogne, the artist lives and works in Montreuil.

Created from fragments of old and original documents that explore the theme of the sea and wildflowers, the artist's collages reveal a poetic and humanistic perspective on the ocean. The ocean becomes a great garden where the collages take root like gardens of the mind, islands of hope where ugliness and pollution are no longer the concern, but rather a world where nature and vegetation reclaim their rights.

In the form of an odyssey, a geography of imaginary islands, ex-votos, offerings, and prayers of the waves, these collages belong to a triple artistic tradition: that of herbaria, graphic arts, and poetry.

As a contemporary version of the herbalist's plates that classified and cataloged plants, the artist assembles fragments of weathered papers, color palettes painted by time, engravings, reproductions of paintings with dried flowers, seaweed, lichens, and plant fibers.

In these artworks, words engage in a dialogue with the silent forms of living beings and the history of past works, capturing the passage of time and existence under glass, like a botanical haiku that pays homage to the oceans and offers a listening to life, a lesson in humility. A journey like an odyssey, a voyage across the seas, a personal and universal adventure where one discovers that the sea is round.
